 About the Book

At the beginning of the 20th century the British Empire was at its height, with its army in the forefront of the mission to bring, what it saw as the tremendous civilizing benefits of the British way of life, to nations it considered were still languishing in the dark ages. Amid concerns that Russian involvement in Tibet threatened British-Indian interests, a British Missionary Force under the leadership of Colonel Francis Younghusband crossed over the border from British India and invaded Tibet. These excerpts from diaries and from official correspondence between the Commission and India relate the progress of the expeditionary force and subsequent negotiations with the Tibetan government - which culminated in the signing of a peace agreement on 7 September 1904. archive photos relating to the expedition and the period but also photos portraying present-day Tibet and the Tibetan way of life - the landscape, the mountains and lakes, the people, the flora and fauna, the three great Lhasa Monasteries (Gaden, Sera and Drepung), the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery, Lhasa and the Potala Palace, and forbidden Mustang.
