 About the Book

Books like this (not written academically, but to underpin a specific view) I always read with a good amount of suspicion to remember the most important arguments and see to what extent they fit what I read, hear, see, experience elsewhere. This book contains a very interesting and provocative hypothesis, which is that our patriarchal society has been preceded by matriarchy and that the turn to patriarchy made society more peaceful. She brings many good sources to the fore, although I think that her use of some is dubitable (for instance, the story of Tobith). Nevertheless, the author has a good feeling for nuance and already indicates the weak points and limits of her position. For those who are interested in gender issues or in history (either Medieval, classic or prehistoric) I certainly recommend this book.
